Celebrating Diversity: Honouring Love, Courage and Progress by Helen McMullan

As I was watching the Festival of Remembrance at the weekend, I was deeply moved to see the 25th anniversary of the lifting of the ban on gay, lesbian, and bisexual personnel serving openly in the armed forces being recognised and celebrated.

A powerful “laying of the drums” ceremony was performed by eight LGBTQIA+ servicemen and women to mark the occasion. It was a moment of pride and reflection – a celebration of progress and acceptance. Yet, it was also impossible not to think about those for whom this came too late – the veterans who were dishonourably discharged because of their sexuality or who walked away from the careers they loved for fear of being discovered. My thoughts were very much with them during that moving tribute.

Watching that ceremony also reminded me of another milestone moment – when gay marriage was finally legalised in England. From 29th March 2014, same-sex couples could legally say “I do”, and the images that filled the news at that time were bursting with love, joy, and authenticity.

As an independent wedding celebrant, I feel incredibly privileged to work with couples from all walks of life, helping them create ceremonies that reflect who they truly are. Every love story is unique, and every celebration should be too. Love is love, and it deserves to be celebrated in all its beautiful forms.

Whilst we can’t change the past, I truly believe the future is most definitely rainbow-coloured – and I’m so proud to be a part of it.
